[CI] scoring system

I agree. A lot of thought went into changing the rule from 'top two then the highest scoring' to 'highest scoring then next top two'. Or, if not a lot of thought, a lot of discussion.

As a member of the 9-1 team who would've benefited from a different rule, I must say that I don't feel unfairly treated.

It's not a hockey game, it's a different set of questions asked separately 2 teams and the totals added (with the minor exception of challenge round steals).

To me , that makes cumulative scoring is more meaningful than it would be in competitive team sports. And you can't play defence in trivia ... or at least it's considered poor form!

Letting the top scoring team in also offsets problems of question balance in individual games, at least to some degree. This Monday was a case in point. We defeated the top scoring team by a single point to remain 9-1, while they fell to 7-3. But it was an unusually unbalanced game and we almost certainly would've lost, if asked teh otehr questions, and then both us and Mods would've finished 8-2. Then the issue wouldn't have been noticeable.

Anything can be changed for next season.

A bit of history: originally, the teams making the Final were the top
team in each division, and the best other team, which was decided by
total points scored.

The problem with that was that, in about half the seasons, it meant
that one or more teams would go into the last week or two of the
season needing to LOSE to make it to the Final.

It would go like this:

Team W L T Points

A 8 1 0 600

B 7 1 1 520

C 6 3 0 570

Team C plays Team A in the last week of the season. Team B has an easy
game and will almost certainly win it. Lets assume team B wins its
game and scores 60 points.

If Team C defeats Team A by 70-60:

B 8 1 1 580

A 8 2 0 660

C 7 3 0 640

Team B wins the division and team A gets through on most points.

If Team C loses to Team A by 70-60

A 9 1 0 670

B 8 1 1 580

C 6 3 0 630

Team A wins the division and team C gets through on most points.

Our team was in the "team C" division for three of the last four
seasons under the old system. It feels really wrong playing a game
knowing that you will eliminate yourself by winning.

So we put the "most points" team into the final first, then the best
two other teams.

I could see putting the top two teams in the Torquemada division into
the Final, but in a season like this that punishes the best team (in
this case the Mods, who scored the most points but were on the wrong
side of the table in a couple of games where the questions weren't
very balanced).
